No matter where we live or what we live in we all have the ability to make our house a home. As a designer and a home owner I think I am especially aware of this difference. We can build a house and fill it with lots of amazing things and often times expensive things but all to often we forget what completes our houses. Filling our houses with memories and laughter and people is what makes a house a home.
Creating an environment where people want to linger because they just feel good or your kids friends always want to play at your house because they are comforable there, are examples that you have made a home. Another way to keep that good feeling in your homes is keeping out contention, whether it is between siblings (and yes I know you can't ALWAYS keep the kids from fighting, but I think you know the difference) or roommates or your spouse, when we encourage and culivate love it is amazing how quickly the mood in our environment can change.
Surrounding ourselves with things we love is another way. This doesn't have to mean you have to go out and spend lots of money on new furniture and expensive artwork. It means taking care of what you have and buying new items that you love. If your house is feeling a little drab I suggest taking an inventory of what you do have and maybe take a can of paint to that old side table or getting a new mat to frame a piece of artwork you love. Little changes can be just what your home needs to breathe new life and love into it.
