Holiday Cake Time with Fondant

Tonight was our first night working with fondant, here is the base of my cake.  Inside the cake is 4 layers- red, green, red, green.  I have a Christmas party this weekend so I figured I would take the cake to the party.  Fondant has a consistency of play dough, minus the salty feel, and it needs to be warmed up a little but you can't work with it for too long because it starts to dry out.  I bought a white base and I had to add in the coloring and knead it to make the coloring consistent.

And here is the finished piece, my first fondant cake!  I kept with a pretty simple design so that I could get a feel for how the fondant works and to see how quickly I have to work with it before it starts to dry out.

The circles were really easy but I think they look fun and whimsical.  I'm definitely a fan of fondant and I think I will keep decorating with it, I just wish it wasn't so dang expensive!

  1. Your cake is absolutely creative - I love it. I did a wedding cake in fondant and was terrified! But it went better than I thought it would and the bride loved it. For my kids I have done the basket weave cake with real flowers, easier, than most things, but really pretty.
